A Life to Sea

The Adventure

"Where did I put that fanny pack? Hmm...must be already packed. I'll worry about it later. I'm late!" says Romie to himself.

"Okay, Wolfie said my ride should've been here at 10:15am." Romie looks at the clock: 10:22am it reads. He steps outside with his suitcase and backpack.

A Black SUV rests in front of the house. "For Romie?" He yells waving his hand. Romie runs over to the SUV.

"Crash detected ahead," says the GPS.

"Oh no, oh no, oh no!" Romie takes out his phone and tries to call Wolfie. *Phone Powers Down* "Ughh! Are you serious right now?" He says audibly. "Hey, can I use your phone? Mine just died."

"I need it for the GPS, sir. Are you comfortable taking the call over bluetooth?" says the driver.

"Yeah! That's fine. Can you dial...ehhh...nevermind I forgot their number. Haha! Do you think we could reroute? I'm on my way out to sea and I CAN'T miss this boat."

15

"I'm sorry, sir. The GPS does not give me any other routes. We should only be about 15 minutes behind. Can you make it?"

"Hopefully, I don't even know what time it leaves. My friend arranged everything. He's the one who ordered the car."

"Must be a nice friend. Might I ask, is this a date?"

"Oh, no, no! Wolfie is my best friend. I've known him for about 6 years."

"Ahh I see. So he should be understanding. If he called the car he should be able to see where we are and the arrival time."

"Ahh, yes true, true. So we should be good. I'll just calm down really quick, then."

The SUV gets closer to the crash scene. It's a two-vehicle crash. The front vehicle, a red sedan with license plate: QUEEN4U. The rear vehicle, a blue truck with license plate: KINGIAM. The front driver a young female. She sat on the concrete crying.

"Don't I know her?" Romie thinks to himself.

16

Romie arrives at the dock. He steps out the car but does not see Wolfie. He walks down closer to the boats. Still no sign of Wolfie. He hears chatter coming from the boat at Dock 3.

"Must be them!" Romie runs over. He steps on board searching for the voices but does not hear anything. He walks down the hallway and enters the kitchen. There is a bottle of Tequila on the counter, some sandwiches, fruit, and cookies.

"I hope he didn't expect me to bring any chasers." He says aloud.

"Hello! Who's there?" An unfamiliar masculine voice yells. Footsteps can be heard. Romie's heart rate increases, face flushing, as he was expecting to hear Wolfie's voice.

The unknown masculine turns the corner out of the bedroom and checks the area. No sign of anything. No noises from Romie.

17

"I've gotta get out of here!" Romie thinks to himself, "And quick!"

The footsteps approach closer and closer. Romie ducks behind the counter. The masculine scans the kitchen and does not see anything. He walks around closer to the counter and notices the tequila bottle open.

"Babe, did you bring tequila and snacks?" The voice yells.

A feminine voice responds, "What?" Another set of footsteps come closer. "What did you say, babe?"

The masculine points to the tequila and snacks. "Did you bring this?"

"No? I thought you did. I saw it this morning before you got here. I assumed you were setting up before I got here."

18

"Nope. You were the first thing I saw when I got here. Go back to the room. I'm gonna look around."

The feminine walks away. Romie slowly opens the cabinet door and eases in.

*Knock* sound can be heard as the door closes.

The masculine turns around and walks back to the kitchen. "Babe, you okay? I heard a noise."

No response. "Babe!" The masculine runs to the room. No sign of the feminine.

"Coast clear," Romie thinks to himself. He slowly opens the cabinet door and steps out. His second foot makes the floor creak.

The masculine runs out the room. Romie hears the footsteps coming speedily. He sprints to the pool deck, makes a sharp left and runs up the stairs.

19

He stands on the upstairs deck able to see the rest of the docks and both ends of the boat. "I've gotta get out of here!"

The masculine steps out onto the pool deck. Romie ducks behind the enclosed deck rails. The masculine walks up the stairs. Romie begins to panic. He decides to lie down like an armadillo.

"Hey! Who are you! Get off my boat!" The voice yells.

Romie pretends to not hear anything. "Hello!" The masculine walks closer and kicks Romie. "Hey! Wake up!"

"Ahhh!" Romie exlaims.

"Who are you and why are you on my boat?"

"Your boat? My friend told me this was his boat."

20

"Yeah, well your friend is a liar, and you need to leave."

"Could I use your phone to call him? Mine died."

"Dude, no! GET OFF MY BOAT!" The masculine yells pointing down the stairs.

Romie gets up and walks down the stairs. "Could you actually help me? My boat was set to leave at 11am."

"Well, I can't help you, but I'll tell you this side is private docking for residents and boat owners. The public docks are on the other side. But there aren't any boats leaving on Sunday. Are you sure you're at the right place?"

"I have to be. He ordered the car."

"Oh, well. I hope you find your friend." He says while showing his arms in a directing motion down the stairs.

Romie steps off the boat and begins to panic.

21

Romie begins to walk down the docks. A flock of pigeons fly into the sky. Romie continues to walk with his suitcase.

"Hey! You lost?" A voice exclaims from behind.

Romie turns around. A male can be seen walking up from one of the boats.

"Actually, yeah! My phone is dead, and I was supposed to meet my friend here at 11, but I can't find him."

"You know what dock he lives at?"

"I don't."

"Color of his boat?"

"Nope! I thought it was a party-type boat."

"Those would be over yonder, but it's Sunday. Come with me. Do you know his name?"

22

"Yes, his name is Wolfie Robcarr."

"Hmm..I've never registered a boat under that name. But my assistant could have. Let's walk to my office. My apologies, I am the Dock Manager. Name's Fitz."

"Thanks, Fitz. I'm Romie."

"Oh, Romie that's cool! Where's Julie? Haha! Kidding."

*Romie looks in disturbance*

They enter the office and Fitz logs into his computer. Scrolling through, he is unable to find the name.

"Yeah, your friend does not have a boat here. You sure you're at the right dock?"

"I must be! He bought..."

23

"Oh wait! Looks like Comms has one boat that left at 10:30am. It looks like it's on the way to Spring Towers Island. People like to go out there and party and stuff. That may be your friend."

"That can't be it. He told me they aren't leaving until 11. He wouldn't leave me anyways. He knows I'm coming."

"Welp, it's all I got. Wanna call him and see?"

"My phone is dead, and I don't know his number off the top of my head."

"Tell you what. I'm heading out to catch some leidmasters. If you want to ride with I can take you to the island. But if he ain't there you're stuck with me for the day."

"Ehh...what the heck! Let's go!" Romie exclaims.
